(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Members of Muslim Shia Ithna Asheri Jammat of Essex meet every year during the sacred month of Muharram to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (a.s) - grandson of the Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w.w) - who was brutally killed alongside his family more than 1,300 years ago after standing up for human rights.
Group member Dr Qamar Abbas explained: "Remembrance of Imam Hussein (a.s) and his family is the time to reflect on the concept of suffering of humankind.
"While we as Shia Muslims remember their suffering, they express strongly their rejection of atrocities of any kind - it is therefore highly appropriate that we contribute to an organisation whose ethos is to alleviate the suffering of people affected by life-limiting illnesses."
Hospice chief executive Tanya Curry said: "We are very grateful for the group’s kindness and generosity again this year.
"The support of our community is really crucial as we continue to provide much needed, free services, to people of all beliefs, background and culture."
